March Rains Bring....

Note: Originally written mid-March 2002

April Showers?

They may bring "May flowers", but March rains bring flooding. A rain so desperately needed kept on coming today. Poor drainage in our town caused alot of early flooding on the streets, thus canceling school.
My son's first response to that is not as you would think. When I was 15, if they canceled school, I would have headed back to bed. My kids know it's time to get up and go out , prepared to work. Around here, while snow cancelations may mean fun in the white stuff, high waters mean someone needs your help. It goes without saying. Many small homes and trailers along the little river are prone to flooding, as are the homes in the poor drainage area in town. How do we help you ask? Bail water? No, though we sure wish. Mostly what people do to help one another, is move valuable items to the 2nd story if possible. If this isn't possible, we'll help load it into borrowed pick ups or whatever. Anything we can do.

This morning, before full daylight, the scanner we have in the house was telling which roads had water on them. I and a couple of older kids set out. Already, neighbors were helping neighbors, strangers in passing, lending a hand. It's just what we do. No one has to ask.
This was actually the easy part of our day. Late in the afternoon, it became apparent that the river was still rising to dangerous levels even though the rain had ceased and the road waters had receded a bit. Most of the homes along the river are poor homes and trailers. These people don't just stand to loose a little carpeting or a few possesions. They chance losing their homes. All you can do at that point is move out what you can, and pray about the rest.

The waters though are not the only flooding that will take place. A flood of people drive around the streets, down near the river looking for anyone who might need their help. Total strangers they may once be, but friends before too long. Whether it be moving items, or offering to drive the family somewhere to wait out the waters.
I live just a little way away from the river, about the equivilancy of a block, but there is quite an uphill road between it and us. The trailers down next to the river, had perhaps 20 ft between them and the water when I came in at 9:00 p.m. Hopefully, the river will end it's rise during the night, and tomorrow will bring us all back together again to move belongings back to their rightful places.

Through the night though, I keep an ear on our scanner, to hear if perhaps someone in a not so low lying area may need a friend. It's just what we do. April showers may bring "May flowers", but March rains bring a flood...of friendship.

New Feature....Young Unicorns

In an English assignment, my 16 year old was asked to write an inspiring poem about death. While helping her edit this poem, I found in her notebook, many wonderful musings and poems. Hopefully, she will allow me to share more of them with you. A couple of other children of mine also write, so as time goes on, a whole new Unicorn generation will be finding their way into people's hearts.
For now, I share this one with you. My daughter's first online publication.

Late page..... and flood update.

I know my pages usually go out on Wednesday evenings, but I waited until this morning so I could add an update. The river crested 4 inches below it's banks at 3:30 a.m.. WHEW!!!! There is still rain in our forecast over the next few days, but hopefully enough of the water will have receded before the new stuff arrives. If it doesn't, they'll be there. The flood of friends.
Peace my friends
